Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová, Hugh Walsh, Gerard Hendrick

I know I voted for Pinocchio. Second best adaptation of the book by that one 0.5 / 100 I took off for that glaring continuity error involving the burnt finger switching hands. The first would be the Del Toro one.

Once is a great singer-songwriter musical. It has perfect final shots that transition to the end titless. Could’ve /should've made my ballot had I remembered it. Same goes for South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.

Labyrinth, my #4, a wonderful, magical and mystical musical. Filled with great pre-cgi era creativeness and a killer soundtrack. Pinocchio, a classic but I saw it too long ago to remember any of the songs. Didn't expect to see it this far into the countdown.

25. Anastasia (1997)
19. Purple Rain (1984)
17. Moana (2016)
12. The Jungle Book (1967)
09. That Thing You Do! (1996)
04. Labyrinth (1986)

Yankee Doodle Dandy was high on my list I believe, awesome film. Cagney is incredible.

South Park and Pinocchio were somewhere near the bottom, both very good in different ways. I used to watch Labyrinth a lot when I was a kid but don't remember too much.

We're now into my part of the countdown, I guess.

Labyrinth is a little dopey, it must be admitted, but also kind of gonzo, which makes it my kind of movie, so I snuck it onto my list at the back end, at #20.

South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut is perverse and insane, so again, my kind of movie and good enough to make my cut at #14.

Pinocchio was Disney's best animated film until Moana came along--the story is better than many of the other Disney films of that era, and the quality of the animation art is at its peak. It was my # 9.

Finally, but not least, Once, a challenging and spare love story with terrific songs, made my list at #13.

I have a feeling that nothing that I like will be in the top 25.
Labyrinth is ok. 🤷🏼*♀️
I haven’t seen the South Park movie.
Pinocchio is great. But not on my list.
I have never heard of Once.

How many of your ballot movies have made it so far and which ones?

I didn’t vote for Pinocchio but it’s a Disney classic of course. I do like it although my last revisit wasn’t as successful…

I have not seen Once but I enjoyed Begin Again okay so I think I’ll check it out down the line. Doesn’t seem like a musical in the classic sense though, so I wouldn’t have voted for it either way.

How many of your ballot movies have made it so far and which ones?
Around 8: West Side Story, South Pacific, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Frozen, Hair, Funny Lady, Cinderella and Oklahoma! I only had nineteen musicals on my ballot because I submitted before I meant to. I was in the middle of figuring out what I wanted on my ballot when that happened. I just let it go because I didn't have time to straighten it out.

Lots of great choices there! Let's hope for more in the top 25.

A Night at the Opera (1935) would have qualified probably. Good film.
Yeah. I absolutely mad to have a Marx Brothers film on my list and I went with Duck Soup instead. Honestly, I could have flipped a coin.

Pinocchio is a film I've been "listening" since I was a kid cause we had an LP of the audio when I was a kid. It wasn't until several years ago that I finally watched it whole. It is a lovely film, even though it is sometimes dragged down by some narrative shortcuts that were usual of animated films and children films. Still, I didn't vote for it; again, I had a good bunch of Disney films already, so I cut the cord with several. Good to see it show up.

As for Once *sigh* Big fan of it so it hurts me a bit to see it barely craked the Top 25. I saw it about 10 years ago and was instantly blown away by its story of love/tragedy, by the honesty of its portrayals, but most importantly to this countdown, the music. Hansard and Irglova are universally great through all the film, but somehow, that greatness shines more in each of their performances. So much that you can't help but laugh and cry with them. It was my #4.

Here's where I stand...

Neither made my ballot. I definitely need watch Pinocchio again... honestly I don't really even remember it beyond just a few minor details and scenes that have cropped up over the years in montages and different things. I might have seen it when I was four or five, but I love the premise and Jordan Peterson has some solid analysis over the film and its themes, which have piqued my interest in it.

I have not seen Once.

My ballot so far:

25. The Smiling Lieutenant (1931, Ernst Lubitsch) (96)
22. 42nd Street (76)
21. Easter Parade (78)
19. A Star is Born (1954) (67)
16. Nashville (39)
14. Duck Soup (65)
13. Yankee Doodle Dandy (32)
11. An American in Paris (42)
9. Pennies From Heaven (56)

So, nine have showed up so far for which I have voted. I would say about eight more on my ballot should be a good "lock." This means at this point I am predicting that 17 of my picks will make the list and 8 will not. The only real surprise and disappointment to me so far on this list is how abysmal of a poor showing An American in Paris faired in the countdown showing up at 42. While I didn't think it would make the top 10, I thought for sure it would make the top 25, so that fact that one of the greatest and most revered musicals of all time, by the single greatest musical director in the history of film, Vincente Minnelli, and the single greatest star of the musical form, Gene Kelly, AND a film which has perhaps the most visual and wonderful musical sequences in film, the ballet number, the fact it barely made the top half of the list shows that either people haven't seen it and/or for those who have seen it, I imagine they had issues with some of the moments in the film that don't exactly vibe with sentiments and philosophies of the 2020s. It's too bad, because it's a brilliant work of art that speaks truths and harkens back to simpler, more pure, straight forward, and honest times.

Oh well.

I'm really curious what the top 10 will bring. The only question mark will be whether or not my number one pick makes the top 10. If not, for shame, for shame!

Cartman remains one of the greatest characters. I do prefer Randy, but Cartman is up there and was really the focal point of the show, especially true in 1999, until the South Park universe really started to come into its own and the show developed far beyond the four main children. It's still largely told through their point of view and perspective, but we have the added touch of seeing other characters become more dynamic and into their own.
