Japanese movie

black and white
director is one of the greats
it starts off with a woman returning to Japan and seeking out an older man she had an affair with whilst overseas, in the hope of rekindling the relationship. Only he is now back with his wife and feels he can't leave her.
At some point he goes off to find her and she's got an American boyfriend she met walking the streets.
Later he is in a hot tub, but I can't remember who with. Another woman is getting jealous.

That sounds like Naruse's Floating Clouds from 1955. The man won't leave his wife because she's sickly.

Nice one. Thanks.

The title explains why I thought I already knew Floating Weeds!

You're welcome, yeah, that can get confusing, especially with Ozu and his seasonal titles. I'll think, "Now what was that one movie, Early Spring or Late Autumn... or was it Autumn Afternoon; maybe Early Summer?"
