What are you listening to while you're MoFoin' it?

Second time ever hearing this. The first time was years ago, and I need to re-evaluate this for my potential top 100 music acts chart for the end of the year.

Oh my god. A new Kendrick album. Oh my god. Dropped today. Kendrick, Opeth, Defeated Sanity, Mewithoutyou, Father John Misty, and they're all getting incredible reviews. Today is going to be insane.

EDIT: No wonder I didn't know about it after constantly looking through new albums lists. It was a surprise drop!

Already nostalgic about the King Crimson concert I went to two months ago. It gave me even more appreciation for this awesome track.

A24's new Stop Making Sense tribute album: Everyone's Getting Involved.

1. Miley Cyrus: Psycho Killer. OK, so it starts dark and industrial, and I think to myself, "Alright, I can dig a cover of a song called 'Psycho Killer' with that vibe, but it's not long before there are too many original but simple dance melodies that get in the way of the original vibe and the subject matter. Overall, it sucked. 35/100.

2. The National - Heaven. When I first saw that, my thought was, "That's actually a legit idea." They did an alright cover. I was never into the original, but this one kinda drones. Shame. They did such amazing albums before. 62.

3. Blondshell - Thank You for Sending Me an Angel. Never heard of Blondshell before, but I gave it a shot. This one was a bit like the previous track but with more droning atmospheres. It gets heavier and a bit more likable as a result. 70.

4. The Linda Lindas - Found a Job. Again, never heard of them. But they're listed on RYM as a pop punk and power pop band. As long as you can remain funky, you can do a palatable cover. And I think that's just what they did. 75.

5. Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado - Slippery People. Third act I haven't heard of. I wasn't expecting an Argentine Spanish language cover, but this had a good indie charm to it throughout, and the singer was nice and soft. I really liked what I got this time. However, I really don't think it needed to last nearly six minutes. 75.

6. Paramore - Burning Down the House. Oh my god. I got what I was after. Songs like this are why I support tribute albums. This adds a new layer of wacky-ass Talking Heads behavior to the original. It's less synth oriented and more hardcore. Now I've heard a few Paramore albums, and I always "liked" them, but this is the first time they kicked my ass. The instrumentation is spot on, focues and wacky at the same time, and Hayley Williams. GOD, Hayley. You really LOVE this song, don't you? Her voice in this is flawless. Rough, soft, outstanding. I legit like this more than the original. 100.

7. DJ Tunez - Life During Wartime. This DJ's apparently super smalltime. His cover here seems to be his biggest deal, and he did this in a style RYM calls "afropiano." I've seen a genre called "Kitchen sink cinema," I am not complaining about that. Now since this is my introduction to that genre, I was a bit charmed by the genre's approach, but it's obvious that this overly glossy cover doesn't fully fit the vibe of the song. It feels like a song for a tropical commercial. Totally different. OK as a song, unimpressive as a cover. I don't hate it the way RYM does, though. And I've learned a long time ago not to be awestruck by the first song of a new genre just because it's new to me. 50.

8. Teezo Touchdown - Making Flippy Floppy. Not much different between this and the original that I can fine, so it's basically more of a copycat than a cover. There's more reverb and ambiance, but that's about it. But, they're having fun with it at least. 65.

9. Jean Dawson - Swamp. I was pretty enchanted by the thick ambiance and chanting here. It reminded me of the Fleet Foxes debut for a moment (an album I adore). Cute folk cover, and thankfully only three minutes or it would be overlong. 70.

10. The Cavemen - What a Day That Was. So these guys are a "highlife" band, a type of African genre. That's perfectly appropriate for a Talking Heads tribute of all bands, but despite some cute charm in the backing harmonics, this cover does not stand out in the slightest. It feels by-the-numbers. 50.

11. BADBADNOTGOOD - This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody). I've heard of these guys, but I've never checked them out. They're known for jazz fusion, but this time they went for a soft rock approach. It was pretty cute, and kind of fit the vibe of the original, but it also got in the way, almost like they were writing something for a commercial or even the Disney Electrical Parade. It's a little too... cutesy.

13. Kevin Abstract - Once in a Lifetime. Everything about this sounds either empty or robotic. There's no sense of the punchiness that the song carries. I mean, if you're gonna cover one of Talking Head's funk-oriented songs, the least you could do is keep the punch, even if you want to do a FOLK cover. This song easily dethrones Cyrus's Psycho Killer as the worst song on the album. At least it only lasts 2.5 minutes... 2/10.

13. Toro y Moi - Genius of Love. Now I'm not into alt-R&B or chillwave, but I've been slowly checking them out in case I find something I love. I've heard of these guys but I don't think I've heard them yet. This cover resurrects the punchiness that was missing from the last cover. The backdrops are a little vaporwavy, but it feels appropriate rather than oversaturated. The percussions and strings are doing the most for keeping the vibes correct. 70.

14. Girl in Red - Girlfriend Is Better. This song's more about the punchiness than anything, but there are parts that feel either too far into generic new rave or empty. So it's OK. Considering that quite a bit of new rave sounds like this, I don't feel comfortable saying "they tried." 63.

15. Lorde - Take Me to the River. Wow. I was not expecting Lorde to be bunched in here. This cover makes a point of carefully balancing art and atmosphere to create a worthy Lorde-style cover. It's got a great mood about it and some nice mutation. I think I like this more than Royals. 75.

16. Chicano Batman - Crosseyed and Painless. I wasn't expecting this to starti out sounding 95% like the original. I don't think that's a good idea. This group had their chance to put their own real spin on it. At least Paramore's cover sounded like both a Paramore and a Talking Heads song. Still a fun song, but why not just listen to the original? 75. Still giving it a good score for accuracy, but taking off points for unoriginality.

OK, I didn't hate most of this, so I'm giving it roughly three stars.
