Directors Who Started Strong, Then Went Downhill

Tools

Scott is a peak and valley guy

Duelist, Alien, Bladerunner Thelma and Louise- Classics
Legend, Black Rain, Someone Watch Over Me, White Squall - Meh
Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Matchstick Men, Kingdom of Heaven - Bangers
Robin Hood, Body of Lies, A Good Year, Counseler, Gods and Kings - low points
Martian, The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Alien Covenant, All the Money in the World - underrated and will age well

,

My pick would be M. Night Shyamalan, though I hear he’s sort of done a comeback.
The swiftest example I know of a director who rose and fell are the guys who made The Blair Witch Project.

Mark

I don't actually wear pants.
I would say the opposite for him..his worst films were his silents...he reached his peak in the 50's near the end of his career.
Yeah I've seen some of Hitchcock's 30s films and they aren't nearly as good as his 50s films. He did taper off a bit in the 60s when he was pretty much done so he did kind of end on a low note. I haven't seen his silents although I've heard they aren't so hot.

Alex Garland? maybe
although he only made 3 movies, so it's too early to judge but the downward trend is there and it's apparent

Ex Machina - Great

Annihilation - OK/Good

Men - Rubbish

I politely disagree.

Ridley Scott immediately comes to mind. From Alien, and Blade Runner to Napoleon and Gladiator 2, the decline is noticable.
