I'm waiting for a host before I watch anything in prep for the countdown. No host, no countdown. Who's hosting???

You host it??? :

I have the time (retired) but I'm too new here (don't know the ins and outs of hosting) and I'm too stupid (math is hard... and I refuse to pay for things like Excel)

I'm not gonna pressure anyone/you to host, because it's definitely a bit of work, but for what it's worth:

a) I don't think you're too new. Other fairly new people have done it, and you're not taking anyone's spot if nobody's volunteering immediately, anyway.

b) You don't need Excel. The ballot software handles 99% of the calculation (you'd be responsible for tiebreakers, which is just based on a few simple rules). And, unrelated, but you can use Google Sheets as an Excel substitute for free (as well as Open Office, if you'd rather use offline software).

If Yoda won't pressure you, then I will Seriously, if you're around daily on MoFo and so far I believe you have been, then you're a natural host.

Yoda has designed software that does most all of the work for you. Now in the old days the host did all the graphics for each day's reveal and calculated the points, but no longer as the software does all that for you. But wait, there's more! It slices, dices and makes Julienne fries OK maybe not but the software does make it much easier!

Oh and being a decades countdown there's no tough decisions to make, if a movie is made in the 90s it's eligible. I know you're a smart cookie I've read your post. But even a MoFo caveman like me has hosted twice before. So if I can do it, anyone can!

BTW if you had any questions or needed any help I'd be happy to help out.

Ha, good grief I've done two already. Time for somebody else to have the fun.
I wouldn't mind hosting, but got a feeling that I might mess things up, I'm assuming that you have to do a lot of ballot counting and keep track of the points that each movie gets.

Oh Oh!...That's the one thing that needs to be done right...No getting things confused, a host needs to pay close attention to details like points, countdown position and tie breaking, etc. Messing up is not an option! You probably should join me on the sidelines, kickback and let someone else do the hosting details.

Hopefully we can do a Group Watch for 90s movies, you should check that out, it's great fun.

Owning up here - I have a brain that likes to invert numbers, 12 will become 21 for example, not always, but it happens - so I have to be careful when I enter them and check the SUMs with each list that comes in to make sure the expected totals line up, things like that. I'm pretty diligent about it when I have to deal with them, and despite that issue, I'm a stats & numbers guy, love the stuff, love listing as well, so if no one else steps up that is ultra eager to do the 90s...

Well, you asked first and we've been waiting for a host for awhile now and you were the first to come forward.
You and Yoda should talk in private message and you can get the low down from the boss himself. You got my support! Especially if you got enthusiasm to do it and you're a stats & numbers guy...then you got the right stuff.

You'll be great!

Indeed he will. We've had a quick chat and it sounds like we're a go. Thank you, @Captain Quint!

We'll talk specifics. I've got a few things in my schedule (and Quint understandably wants to make sure he's up to speed with everything), so the the preliminary thread might take a week or two to go up, but we'll try to have you guys with some clear dates and criteria before the holidays so you can use those precious hours off to cram more movies.

Trouble with a capital "T"
@Captain Quint I made an archive of all of the past MoFo Countdowns with links and various stats, you might find that page helpful when you go to write up the preliminary thread for the 90s countdown. The countdowns on the top of the page are the newest, on down to the oldest.

We should have lunch someday to compare our most proud lists.

I did look up the preliminary for musicals this morn, but that's a great help Citizen, especially for the other decades lists - because there's a few potential issues with films that bookend the decade (89/90 - 99/2000) - (I've spoken with Yoda about this, so it'll get worked out - but I did want to see if others addressed this situation (and I see SpelingError did for his)

Also, 3 months, 3 months!? In some cases, 4 and 6... and here I was getting that little knot in my stomach from memories of past polls I hosted elsewhere where I had 2 weeks. And that's when I had to gather and crunch the numbers by hand and come up with the graphics and research the subject of the poll, in addition to the other tasks, all before posting the results.

I enjoyed the work, but 2 weeks was like... "welp, here comes ulcer time" - Yeah, I know a lot of lists pour in at the deadline, but 3 months, even 2 months, is a lot more relaxing than 2 weeks, especially with the way you're doing it here with the software.

Gives me time to ease into this, get comfortable with the process - looking forward to it - and thanks for the support and encouragement. It's nice to know volunteering doesn't require that I fight in a game of death (or does it....?)

Yup 3-4 months is the standard for what we call the 'watch period'. For many of us the watch period is important as that's when we do movie watching events here at MoFo or on our own watching or rewatching lots of movies for the upcoming countdown. Sounds like you have experience doing this sort of presentation

Ha, too funny, but lucky you, that would only apply if you hosted a genre countdown The MoFos can have strong opinions about what should or shouldn't be included in a genre. On that link to the Countdown Archives you probably seen that before we did the Musical countdown we did twin Noir countdowns, a Film Noir and a Neo Noir both at the same time. That was my idea as so many people wanted the Film Noir countdown to include Neo Noir and some wanted all crime films included. I had quite the uphill battle getting that on the docket, but us MoFos can work together and make anything happen if we try!

Previous decade hosts have generally just gone by whatever year is listed on IMDb. I would suggest that you make it easy on yourself and stick with the precedent.
