Top 5 films 1st half of the 2020s

Tools

So guys, in 3 weeks or so we will be half way (50%) through the 2020s.
I think consensus is that it's been a pretty disappointing decade so far for movies.
Maybe we will appreciate it more further down the track?

But anyway, what are your top 5 (or other number such as 10, if you prefer)?

I confess to not having seen an enormous amount from the decade and I've not seen Oppenheimer for example or Megalopolis. And I gave up on Killers of the Flower Moon.
Of what I have seen, I've struggled to find much I thought was amazing in terms of motion pictures.

My tops would be something like this (including documentaries):

1. Whitney Houston: A Concert for a New South Africa (documentary) 2024 USA
2. Fire of Love (documentary) 2022 France
3. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio 2022 USA
4. Palm Springs 2020 USA
5. Aftersun 2020 UK
6. The Zone of Interest 2023 UK

How about you?
Do it with or without documentaries, as you wish.

I haven't been following up on 2024 recently, but so far:

1. Across the Spider-Verse
2. Everything Everywhere All at Once
3. Babylon
4. Del Toro's Pinocchio
5. Soul

There's a lot I haven't seen, but...

1. The Zone of Interest
2. The Banshees of Inisherin
3. Spontaneous
4. Civil War
5. Perfect Days

3 Weeks? Time flies...

To my experience, one could only enjoy today's cinema accepting that it won't be as wonderful of a time as it would be had they been watching works from Great masters from 40s - 80s... and try to enjoy the thrill of the moment for what it is.

Despite a weak 2020 (for obvious reasons), I think it's been a good decade for movies so far.

Seriously? No Green Knight or Barbie?

Well let's start this list out right:

1. Green Knight, The
2. Barbie
3. Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
4. Invisible Man
5. Love Lies Bleeding

I liked the Green Knight. I think some people didn't quite get it.

I don't actually wear pants.
#1 is All Quiet on the Western Front. I'm not sure after that. I loved Godzilla Singular Point and Hyena, although those are shows and not movies.

In terms of present-Me recommending movies to past-Me.

Top-tier
Zone of Interest (2023)
A Night of Knowing Nothing (2021)
Aftersun (2022)
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
The Underground Railroad (2021)

Next tier, marginally further down:
Memoria (2021)
After Yang (2021)
The Green Knight (2021)
Titane (2021)
Drive My Car (2021)
(possibly in this tier) I Saw the TV Glow (2024)

I'll need a few rewatches of the short, ME, to decide how I feel about it.

2021 is apparently for me, the year of extremely good, but not quite the best, level of movies.

Also in close consideration for the second tier (so, I guess the third tier)
Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy
The Northman
Kinds of Kindness
Poor Things
Furiousa
Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World
Benedetta
Days

Promising Young Woman
Barbarian
Anatomy Of A Fall
Gretel & Hansel
Barbie

I'm afraid I can't think of any movies in the 2020s that I thought were particularly good.

Edit: I saw Napoleon. I thought it was incredibly disappointing. The movie was confused. I don't know what audience they were trying to appeal to, but they ended up catering to neither women who wanted a chick flick, nor to historical enthusiasts who wanted something like Cromwell (1970). They glossed over a whole bunch of really key moment's in his life, and misrepresented him as some kind of dithering, impotent teenager.

Edit 2: Also, Wellington was not some stiff lipped old man. He was charismatic, young, and genteel.

RIP www.moviejustice.com 2002-2010
I haven't seen a lot of stuff from this decade yet, as I'm usually several years behind, but so far my top 2 are Licorice Pizza and Mank. Top Gun Maverick was great fun and so wonderfully made and I also enjoyed Godland despite its flaws. The Killer was solid and Fassbinder is great in all his films. Oppenheimer was a huge non disappointment, disappointment, meaning it was a typical Nolan film with all his flaws, quirks, and horrible pacing, editing, and schizo plot lines going on. Great subject material and a solid story in there if they gave it to better writers, directors, and editors. Brilliant Murphy performance wasted.

Oh and Dune has to be up there with the best films of the 2020s.

But Licorice Pizza is a masterpiece and amazing. Best film I've seen of the 2020’s so far.

1. Licorice Pizza
2. Mank
3. Top Gun Maverick
4. Dune
5. The Killer
