Your Most Controversial Film Opinions?

I don't actually wear pants.
Never read the books. I like the movies. As far as trilogies go, top five for me. I've never met Tom Bomadil and I am willing to concede that the books may be 10X better, but one can do this without also conceding that the films are trash for this reason.
I saw the movies long before I read the books and never liked them. Then I read the books and now I detest the movies. I've never enjoyed them.

I hate insomnia. Oh yeah. Last year I had four cases of it, and each time it lasted three months.

I'm a bit surprised. I am a fan of the book(s) and had just finished re-reading LotR when Fellowship came out. I thought they did a fairly good job of it.
Well he did ask for controversial opinions. I know the films are popular and I've never argued that they're popular. I just argue that I think they're terrible.

@stillmellow
“I agree on Munich.”

Munich is definitely one of Spielberg’s best films. I would argue it’s also his most mature, even more than Schindler’s List.

“All of the changes made for Lord of the Rings from book to screen made the movies disastrously awful. I've not seen such messy garbage that people love that ruined such a great story. The books are excellent; the movies are trash.”

Funny, everything you just said about the LOTR films is what I think of Jackson’s Hobbit films.
IMO, the LOTR movies are phenomenal. Yes, the books are better because they’re literary masterpieces, but in some ways, the movies actually improved on the books. For example, Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens streamlined the narrative. Also, by getting rid of Tom Bombadil and creating an inner conflict within Faramir regarding the One Ring, they fixed a problem I’ve always had with the books.

@Wooley
“Shakespeare In Love deserved Best Picture.”

I don’t think SIL deserved to win BP, but I do it’s a terrific film and much better than its reputation would suggest. Also, Saving Private Ryan is a bit overrated. It’s greatness mainly lies in its hyper-realistic battle scenes; the actual plot is meh.

@SpelingError
“Is it controversial to say Gone With the Wind is a bad film?”

I don’t think it’s controversial, but such a statement seems a bit of a head-scratcher. With that being said, a lot of people think GWTW is a racist film. I can see that, but I would argue that in some ways, the movie was racially progressive for its time.

Interesting. So, a little bit contrast effect, a little bit bad taste.

Dustin Hoffman is one of America's most overrated actors.

I'll give him Midnight Cowboy. That's it.

Speaking of Dusty, I think The Graduate is one of the most overrated movies ever made.

He got high marks for Rain Man from most. Allegedly a very true-to-life portrayal of a MoFo poster.

I wouldn't even give him Midnight Cowboy. I haven't liked him in anything. Hoffman just comes across as "Woe is me; I'm sad and need attention; pity me," in everything. It gets very old very quickly.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean?
Just a joke.

Musicals should not be eligible for the Oscars.
Why not?

I'm curious what your logic is. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They're films just like action films or fantasy films, and they're eligible for Academy Awards. What's the kicker?
Maybe a special category under the Tony Awards.
But they're not Broadway Shows. They're movies.
Why should they be eligible for the Tony Awards instead of the Oscars?

Is it controversial to say Gone With the Wind is a bad film?

I don't think so. I know a handful of people who don't like it. I am one of them. Didn't like Lawrence of Arabia (even gave it another chance last year) or Zr. Zhivago, either.

That's what surprises me. Not that you offered a controversial opinion just what that opinion is.

Intersting.
I think Hoffman runs circles around DeNiro and Pacino, his most famous contemporaries.

It did get old - just not as quick. I think he's pretty good in supporting roles. The Ratso speech impediment annoyed the hell out of me, the whining, but it could have been the director. He plays a similar kind of nebbish in "Pappillon". Even in "Rain Man" - Tom Cruise (never liked him) is the lead. He's just too wimpy to be a credible lead actor. Being short doesn't help, but Al Pacino was more than convincing in "The Godfather" (Part 2, especially).. By the third one, I forget he was in the first two. I think "Is that the same guy?" Even the occasional yelling didn't convince me.

I actually started this thread without an opinion. When I do, it's usually not to load the sample - I want to make sure not to influence..

I still think 99% of movies made in my lifetime suck, and I've seen 903 of them. And I go into every movie thinking I'll like it. I spent a lot of time deciding and deciphering. I rather not watch a movie than to see a mediocre one. And in general, it's rare for me to watch a movie, and I might have seen a few good movies per year, but it's been a long time since I saw a GREAT movie, but that's one disadvantage of the internet. I remember watching 4 good/great Eastern European movies per day for almost a week. If I had to buy anything, I wouldn't have been able to.. I use message boards to get the best movie possible, or other sites.. If I see a great unique movie, I'll look on IMDB lists to see if it hits any categories I might like, and have added a few thousand to my watch-list this way. I'll continue with my controversial takes.

There are no great directors who went to film school.

The 5 worst movies I've seen
-the wolf of wall street
-the doors
-do the right thing
-the irishman
-grandma

I think Hoffman is a good actor. I enjoyed his performances in Midnight Cowboy, Kramer vs. Kramer, Tootsie, Little Big Man, Rain Man, All the President’s Men, and Wag the Dog. But I don’t think he’s anywhere near as good as De Niro and Pacino. Those two are in the pantheon of great actors, IMO.
I’m curious, is there anyone here who agrees with me that The Graduate is highly overrated and not a great movie?
