2025 Film Challenge

I also just noticed a cute accidental detail. I happened to include both Dassin and Mercouri this year and the two were married.
I can't remember/don't know if it's been a category in the past, but movies featuring (as cast or crew) real life couples seems like a cute concept.

Welcome one & all!

It's that time of the year again so let me present you with the 8th annual film challenge! Starting this year, the challenge will be ever so slightly easier since the number of films needed to complete it has been reduced by 10, to 152 in total. We will also be starting a new, recurring subsection of the Main Challenge, dedicated to the cinema of specific countries. You can find our first iteration in section J. Please let me know if any clarifications are necessary or if you see any mistakes and they will be addressed promptly. Also kindly note the last bullet point, in case you wish to make it easier to follow each other's progress.

Main Challenge

Nightmare Mode

Important Notes:
  • The challenge officially starts on January 1st 2025, so start updating your lists with films you watch after that date.
  • How you count films is up to you. This is not a contest and it is up to each and every one to decide how they want to do this. I would suggest going for one category per film either in the main challenge or in nightmare mode, preferably films you watched for the first time this year, but that's just me.
  • In order for everyone to be able to effortlessly scroll down the page, I would suggest wrapping your updates in collapsible text, like in this post.
  • One of the Nightmare Mode challenges includes 10 films suggested by other participants, so please send me at least 10 suggestions each, in order to create a healthy and diverse pool of films for everyone to draw from.
  • If you wish to keep one post which you will be updating throughout the year, you can let me know and I will link it below so we can have every list in one place to be able to track each other's progress.
Have fun watching films this year!

Wow! This is another amazing challenge, looking forward to participating again this year!
Trying to do the normal and the nightmare challenge in 2024 was a lot, so I think I am going to aim to complete the Normal challenge this year and then give myself bonus points if I can complete some of the nightmare challenge as well

Welcome!
Be sure to send me some recommendations and if you wish, let me know which post you will be using for updates so I can link it on the OP.

I got a section finished. It was a tough one, it helped it was largely and not entirely. lol

C. Location, location, location…location
[watch a film largely set in each one of the following locations]
1. Hospital - No Way Out (1950)

2. School - Bright Road (1953)

3. Courthouse - American Violet (2008)

4. Police Station - The Negotiator (1998)

On to the next...

This was incidental, but I went to a film festival yesterday and caught Freud from 1962. I knew at the very least that I would fill one of the Freudian Slip categories...

Which one did you attend?

Sorry if this has been asked before but regarding the Awards categories, like the Cannes Film Festival sub-category, does it have to be a best film award or similar? Or can other awards for instance for actors or director count too?

Any category is fine.

Another section in the books. This one was much more enjoyable, especially the movie Fences. Usually, that kind of movie is my cup of tea but the performances were soooo good. I almost wished the movie was longer.

G. Freudian Slip
[watch a film featuring each of the themes reminiscent of Sigmund Freud]
1. a film in which dreams play a significant role - Eve's Bayou (1997)

2. a film in which the protagonist is a strong father figure - Fences (2016)

3. a film with overtly sexual themes - She's Got To Have It (1986)

I think Eve's Bayou is also really great. I owe that one a rewatch, as it's been years.

Technically, it's a rewatch for me but I haven't seen it in at least a decade. I forgot how good that movie was. It's a very underrated movie.

I got out of my slight movie burn out a while back, but I didn't think to do the 2024 challenge. I'll try to do this one. Already got some, too.
