Airheads is fine. I did thnk about specfically naming that one, but as he's not the lead and I put "for the most part" I let it go.

A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
Dir. Alfonso Arau

Nice to look at period piece movie about a returning WWII vet who returns home to his wife a woman who he hardly knew and discovers she's not the woman he thought she was. Keanu Reeves is the vet. Once he leaves his wife he meets a pregnant Mexican American woman who's wealthy family owns a huge vineyard in Napa Valley California. The Spanish-Italian actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón is the unmarried pregnant woman returning home to a strict family, fearing the worse from her very stern father. She bumps into the vet on a bus and after getting to know each other he offers to accompany the young woman to her family's vineyard estate, pretending to be her husband. But only for one day at which time he will leave, making it appear that the husband has left the young woman.

The film has a great setting and some solid acting from Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and Giancarlo Giannini who plays her father...and from veteran actor Anthony Quinn who plays the kindly grandfather. Keanu Reeves well is more or less himself. The story can be cliched at times and a bit overly wrought but still enjoyable as long as one doesn't look for perfection here.

90s movie #34
I haven't seen that in years, but I liked it a lot and it's a chick flick done right.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Dante's Peak (1997)

The funnest movie I've watched in a long time. This was a blast! and in more ways than one Totally implausible of course to drive a suv nearly underwater or to drive on a river of lava, but who cares...this was exciting and the practical special effects (not CG) looked great and added so much to the movie. The screenshots I used don't do the film justice as the actual effects are far more spectacular. Loved the location shooting in Idaho for the town and shooting in my state at Mount St. Helens crater which looked amazingly mammoth on screen. I don't think they could make a film like this today and if they did it would probably be all green screen and CG.

90s movie #41

I watched a few of the rom-coms that were recommended recently. These are just some quick thoughts about them.

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations.

Pretty Woman (1990) - Good movie. I liked Richard Gere's character more than Julia Roberts' character. She came across a bit pretentious at the beginning, but she got more likable as the movie went on. I loved their chemistry, and I loved the ending.

The Wedding Singer (1998) - I think this is one of Adam Sandler's better movies, but it's not as good as 50 First Dates.

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) - This was okay, but not as good as I had hoped. There was just too much going on, and in the end, I didn't really care who ended up with who.

Blast from the Past (1999) - This movie was a lot of fun. It's probably the best of my recent watches.

French Kiss (1995) - I like both Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan, and the movie was good, but I found Kevin Kline's french accent a bit distracting.

Glad you liked Blast from the Past, me and my wife really liked that one. We've seen it twice and it always puts a smile on my face. I considered watching or rewatching all of the other ones you just watched. I've seen The Wedding Singer and might check that out again, if I have the time. Stay tuned! I'll be posting more 90s movies. I'm aiming for 100 watched before the countdown starts.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Boys on the Side (1995)
Dir. Herbert Ross

I liked it well enough and it had it's strong points. The overall story line worked well and I liked all three of the actresses (Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker, Drew Barrymore). I laughed, sometimes, but I wish this had been even more focused on the drama and personal interactions of the three leads. It's a story about female bonding with life's difficulties told from a female viewpoint which I liked, but it seemed at times to be a world written by a male and indeed the writer was a man. Has Drew Barrymore ever looked cuter in a movie!

Thanks for the recommendation of Blast from the Past. I don't know yet if it will make my list, but it has a chance.

I always enjoy reading your reviews, so keep them coming.

I've watched or rewatched almost 50 movies for this countdown, but I just haven't had time to post about them. Some of my favorites have been Mr. Holland's Opus (1995), Good Will Hunting (1997), Ghost (1990), Analyze This (1999), Primal Fear (1996), and Heart and Souls (1993).

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

I'm a fan of Tim Burton and it's always a treat to look at the visual world that he envisions on screen. In Sleepy Hollow he creates the look of another world, like a town that's out of time and perched on the edge of midnight. Loved the monochrome lack of colors and the set oozed dread, very cool. Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors and I liked the way he played his character. He never went too big or over the top, he gave a very controlled, metered performance, I liked that. I liked everyone else too especially Christopher Walken who I wish had more airtime. I read that Depp did all of his own stunts including the horse carriage chase fight scenes, impressive as some of those were dangerous looking.

90s movie #43

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Volcano (1997)

A good movie to watch if you don't care what you watch. I watched it and was bored silly. A couple of nights ago I seen the much superior Dante's Peak (1997) and let me say Volcano blew I liked Anne Heche which is the reason why I watched the movie and I liked Don Chedle and Tommy Lee Jones was doing his usual self. The script is hyper from the get go and everyone is talking fast, I guess they were excited to see red hot lava in the streets of L.A. Problem was the sound mix made it hard to catch all the dialogue and there was no time for a personal story so I didn't care if these people made it or not.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
Dir. Michael Patrick Jann

'A small-town beauty pageant turns deadly as it becomes clear that someone will go to any lengths to win.'

Dark comic, mockumentary that reminded of the quirkiness of Best In Show (2000) and made me laugh as much! This was funny, the humor poked fun at just about everything and probably could not be made today. Featuring a large cast of familiar and is Amy Adams first movie, I didn't even recognize her at first she was so young here.
