Films after which you felt like crap

Schindler's List also made me feel empty. For some reason I watched it a second time. All I wanted to do after each viewing was take a nap and sleep away the depression. Again; this film is excellent and I have no complaints about it as a movie. It's just so bleak and depressing.

I don’t understand why people think Schindler’s List is bleak and depressing. Since it’s about a man who risks his fortune and life to save over a thousand Jews during the Holocaust, I think it’s a very uplifting, even though it’s one of the worst Holocaust movies ever made in how it represents the Shoah (cinematically, it’s brilliant). If you want to know what a bleak and depressing Holocaust movie looks like, watch The Grey Zone.

For me it was more than just the end result but also how we got there. Sure Oskar Schindler saved all of those people. There were also about ten times that many in the movie he didn't save. Maybe you know better.

I hate insomnia. Oh yeah. Last year I had four cases of it, and each time it lasted three months.

I understand that, but the fact that he saved any at all is a miracle. And 1,100 is a lot for one person to save. I have my own problems with the movie, but bleak/depressing isn’t one of them. Compared to The Grey Zone, Schindler’s List looks like a Pixar movie.

Yeah The Grey Zone is one helluva a bleak holocaust movie, good movie too. Another one is Son of Saul (2015) also good.

Hm I think I see your point, so far as Schindler's List goes. I can concede the end result is more uplifting. Leading up to it is such an emotional drain that it's hard to recover from it. I guess it depends on which part draws your focus?

I haven't seen Grey Zone although now I am curious based on your comparison.

It certainly sounds of quality. I'll have to look for it.
If you see it, let me know what you thought. I’d be interested in your opinion given your feelings about Schindler’s List.

No Country for Old Men
Same here - I was just mad at the movie:
The hero gets randomly killed 3/4 of the way through.
The villain drives away, scot-free.
And we're left with some bizarre soliloquy from Tommy Lee Jones in his kitchen.

I agree. I view Schindler's List as a story of one man's redemption that is set against the backdrop of WWII and the Holocaust. The story reminds me of the biblical one of Saul / Paul.

My local library has it although it's currently checked out so I placed a request for it. How soon it'll be returned is anyone's guess. I'll try to remember to share thoughts once I see it.

Before I can respond to this, I need a more specific definition of "felt like crap."
I would guess the OP meant movies that make us emotionally feel horrible.

From way back, one I recall was The Pawnbroker, seen at a festival. That movie was so grim. I've never rewatched it and don't plan to. It broke ground in several ways (nudity, depictions of the holocaust, racism, etc) but damn, I don't want to go there for entertainment.
I saw this with my mom. She had to watch it for its depiction of PTSD.

I look forward to your opinion. If my hunch is correct, after watching The Grey Zone, you’ll be complaining that Schindler’s List was too upbeat.

Given that the protagonist is a Catholic (though not a very good one) who committed sins but then redeemed himself in a big way, I always thought Schindler’s List was more of a Catholic movie than a Jewish one. Not to mention the fact that the movie is supposedly about Jews by a Jewish director but the main characters are Gentiles. That was one of the movie’s two biggest problems for me.

I make no promises and am open to the possibilities. I like to watch movies people recommend, especially when the subject matter interests me. It'll be a couple of weeks. I'm usually good about posting my thoughts on the Last Movie Watched thread on here, although I may have forgotten you recommended it before then.
