50 Movie Titles That Got Lost In Translation

Some of these really are worth your time.

Army Of Darkness is Captain Supermarket? Die Hard 3 becomes Die Hard: Mega Hard? And you don’t want to know what Boogie Nights turned up as…

Published on Nov 21, 2008

On their journey around the international film markets, films have a habit of changing names, as local distributors target the flicks at their audiences. Sometimes, however, as this list shows, a new title doesn’t always quite capture the meaning of the original when it’s translated back into English.

We’ve hunted round many corners of the Internet for this collection, and credited sources at the bottom. If you’ve got any more to add, do let us know. Meanwhile, we’ll start our tour in China, where they’ve got this little lot…

Feel free to add your own.

I remember that in an Eastern European country (I'm thinking it was Poland or Czech Republic, but I'm not confident) that Snatch was translated as, well, ****. I'm pretty sure you can work out which word that is.

In Japan You Only Live Twice became 007 Dies Twice and, in Belgium, From Russia With Love became Love And Kisses From Russia.

I have French work colleagues who kindly tell me the French title of The Matrix is simply Matrix.

The other ones are correct though. As I'm told, are the Spanish and Italian titles. I do like working in a such multi-national office.

I've only checked the posters for Army of Darkness and The Horse Whisperer but both of those are right. Army of Darkness is just just Captain Supermarket written phonetically in katakana. The literal translation of The Horse Whisperer is "(someone is) held by the winds of Montana" (Montana no kaze ni dakarete.)

The Japanese Army of Darkness poster is pretty cool, by the way:

This one, to me, is the most weird and confusing one.

The Full Monty: Six Naked Pigs
Leaving Las Vegas

See No Evil, Hear No Evil
Don't Look At Me Because I Can't Hear You.
I thought this next one was quite clever and actually a good title:
Alien
The 8th Passenger... or, The 8th Passenger Is Death.
Thanks to all for making me laugh when I badly need it!
