Favorite Viewing of The Month?

Tools

how many times have you seen it?
Not enough.

Only 4 so far, but hope to catch it a few more times.

Apologies, this is a late post. I only watched one film in September that I did not particularly enjoy, so I'm skipping that month.
My favourite film of August was: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) - Lewis Milestone.

My favourite first time viewings of October:

1. Conclave (2024)
2. Tommy (1975)
3. The Runner from Ravenshead (2010)
4. The Glass Wall (1953)
5. Beware: Children at Play (1989)

My favourite rewatches of October:

1. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
2. Abigail (2024)
3. Scream (1996)
4. Hocus Pocus (1993)
5. ParaNorman (2012)

1. La Jetee (1962) 9.75
2. The Lodger (1927) 9.5
3. Limite (1931) 9.25
4. Leave Her to Heaven (1945) 9
5. Bonnie and Clyde (1967) 9*
6. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) 9
7=. You Were Never Really Here (2017) 8.75
7=. The Shape of Water (2017) 8.75
7=. In a Lonely Place (1950) 8.75
7=. These are the Damned (1962) 8.75

*watched part in Oct, part in Nov

I don't actually wear pants.
For October of 2024, which was a shortened amount due to not getting back into movies until the 22nd, although thirteen in ten days isn't bad, I would say Clockwise. It's hilarious and unendingly clever. John Cleese's plans unraveling at the seams always entertains me so this is right up my street. I know he didn't write it, but it seems like it was written with him in mind.

Unlike the other two years where I spent October watching movies relating to Halloween(Suspiria, House, Phantom of Paradise, The Devils, etc), this month I was in the mood to watch more Japanese anime movies as I am starting to develop an interest in these types of movies. I only watched six movies this month with only three of them being anime. After falling in love with Kiki's Delivery Service, I want to see more! These movies included:

Talk To Her(started at end of September and ended at start of October)

Persepolis

Belladonna of Sadness

Princess Mononoke

Kiki's Delivery Service

Onibaba

This movie made me smile from start to finish as I was watching it. While watching this movie, I felt relaxed as I watched Kiki and her adventures in the town that she moved into. Usually, I dislike when a movie gets mean-spirited with the characters, but Kiki is the farthest thing from it and is a very welcoming, heartwarming, and friendly movie.

This is probably because I adored all of this movie's characters from Jiji, Osana, Tombo, and especially Ursula. I love watching the scenes where Ursula and Kiki are enjoying each other's company, especially the relatable scene where Ursula is helping the witch regain confidence in her magic. Her statement says that sometimes she feels she can paint but sometimes can not remind me of how I feel about my guitar playing. Sometimes I feel like a master while other times I feel like I am terrible at the guitar.

Lastly, the soundtrack of this movie is beautiful. I especially love the flute solo that is played when Kiki is at Ursula's cabin. I even fell asleep with some of the music still humming in my head. I find it disappointing that Cocomelon gets viewed by kids around the world while most kids nowadays have not seen Kiki's Delivery Service. I think all little kids should see this one as it is very enriching for not just them but also for adults as well. I will be watching Kiki's Delivery Service many more times(don't overplay it) and will be showing my children this movie too.

For October -
#1) Exhuma (2024) - spooky supernatural folk tale rooted in Korean culture and history - I was really into this from start to finish

Other Halloween fare that I enjoyed - Oddity, and Infested

Aside from the scares...
Mollenard (1938) - AKA "Hatred" from Siodmak - Harry Baur was aces in this one.
Sidewalls (2011)
Our Mutual Friend (1921)
- Despite the second half being in fragments
Return of the Secaucus Seven (1980)
Southern Comfort (1981)

All were first time viewings

October '24

(Dumbledore voice) "Another Horrorthon...gone." Not a bad entry in the 15 I watched. There was just one I wasn't sure what to do with.

Great (4-4.5 stars):

Exhuma
Invaders from Mars (1953)
It Came from Outer Space
Night Creatures
Oddity (#1 favorite)
Spider Baby
The Empty Man
The New York Ripper
The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Good (3-3.5 stars):

Cuckoo
Night of the Demons (1988)
The Vourdalak
Willy's Wonderland

Not Sure What to Do With:

Gothic - One plot summary describes it as "an evening of ghoulish tales," so I thought I was in for an anthology movie. It's definitely not that, but I decided to stick it out. While I didn't dislike it, since I don't know much about Lord Byron, Percy Shelley or Mary Shelley beyond the latter being the Frankenstein author, the experience was like going to the wrong class, but staying for the entire lecture anyway. If you're passionate or at least have more of a working knowledge of those authors than I do, go for it!

For my first-time viewings for November of 2024, I'd go with either Confidential Report or Black Bear. It's hard to choose between them because they're wildly different and great for different reasons.

November was a weak movie month for me. Even my favorite viewing was barely mediocre. The Seventh Curse is a silly Hong Kong turkey that's stupid enough to mildly amuse. Still, only 2.5/5 and that's the best I watched all month.
